526th CC&S

526th CC&S

The 526th was one of two Collection Classification and Salvage units in the country. The other one was located in the southern part of the country. We ran a junk yard. We received from other units equipment that was wrecked or in need of repair. When material was to be returned to the states or Japan for repair it came to us. Everything from vehicles of all types down to handguns. We had a motor pool full of wreckers and 5 ton tractors as well as lowboy trailers for hauling to the ships at the port in Qui Nhon.. We did have one M88 operated by a guy named Willie who was wounded in the TET Qui Nhon battle when the M88s from the battalion were sent down to use the 50 cal guns to destroy the VC holed up in some buildings. We had a packing and crateing platoon or section that built crates for shipping material from engines to whatever. We had a steam cleaner to clean all the motor vehicles before they could be shipped out. That job was akin to cleaning the grease trap in the mess hall in basic training. We also used torches to cut throught the actions of weapons which were not repairable............Jim Michaud
