5th Maintenance Battalion Reunion 2006

I arrived at the hotel somewhere around 5:30 PM and was surprised to see Roger Bland and Bob Barnes standing in the lobby near the front desk. I didn't expect a welcoming comittee. I checked in, found my room, went back to the lobby called Dennis' room and the four of us got together in the lounge. Ken and Debby Hamblin met us there a little while later.

Friday Ken and Debby took the trip to the top of the arch while me and my wife Jadz decided we had had enough air time with the flight out and took a riverboat cruise. We later met up with Dennis, Ken and Debbie in the Casino. We went back to the hotel and met with Billy Smith and his wife and Ed and Christine Kaminski . We had dinner in a small but loud burger joint a few blocks from the hotel. Back at the hotel we finally caught up with John who is probably still cursing the interstate highway system.

The 2nd Reunion went well and we all had a great time. For those of you who didn't make it, you missed out on a great time. I didn't get there until Friday evening so I can't report on what happened on Friday other than some went to the top of the Arch and Bob Barnes and Roger Bland spent half a day at the Military Archives looking for info on the Battalion and the 526th. They came up with some very interesting results which I am sure will be posted on the web site in the near future.

On Saturday after we all met for breakfast we loaded up in cars and drove to the Budweiser Brewery for the guided tour and free beer. From there we managed to find our way to Euclid Street, the St Louis entertainment district, where we ate dinner at
Culpepper's. Great shrimp and steak dinners at a modest price. We finished up the evening with more socializing at the hotel.

The hotel accommodations at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in downtown St Louis were great thanks to Roger Bland. He also negotiated a good rate for us all.

We discussed future plans and all agreed that it was important to continue these reunions. Those of us who have attended the first two have all come away from them feeling that it was time and money well spent.

The reunion next year will be held August 9 - 12, 2007 in Colorado. We
expect it will be held in Colorado Springs, depending on what can be
arranged for hotel accommodations. If we meet in Colorado Springs the
highlight will be an Air Force Academy tour. Other sights to see are Pikes Peak, Cave of the Winds, Seven Falls, Manatou cog railway, Garden of the Gods, Cripple Creek, shopping in Manatou Springs and the Broadmoor Hotel.

Make your plans now to attend the 2007 Reunion of the 5th Maintenance Bn(DS). We hope to see you there.
